This is a breakout board for the MSGEQ7 Graphic Equalizer chip. Using this chip, you can take any audio input from a standard 3.5mm stereo jack and read the levels of seven frequency bands. This boards features an authentic MSGEQ7 Graphic Equalizer chip bought from the manufacturer Mixed Signal Integration, and not a cheap clone that won’t power up.

By using this breakout, you can easily visualize the amount of audio you have across the following seven frequency bands

  1. 63Hz
  2. 160Hz
  3. 400Hz
  4. 1kHz
  5. 2.5kHz
  6. 6.25kHz
  7. 16kHz

The level is read as a voltage level from 0 to VCC on the OUT pin of the board. Frequencies are cycled through by applying a 0-VCCsignal to the strobe pin. You can use those frequency levels to adjust other things like dancing LEDs! Test code is available on the Rheingold Heavy site and github repository to help get you up and running.

This version of the breakout also features a header for integrating a different audio source than the straight line in jack, so if you want to use a microphone instead of tethering your audio over a cable, you can do that too!
